The online tool at realtimecarbon.org is an excellent, instant visualisation of real time emissions statistics.
The tool enables you to see the grid functioning, allowing you to actively monitor when would be the best time to use electricity to cut costs, avoid power surge and ultimately cut carbon emissions.
The tool shows when using power is most polluting through the use of clear and understandble graphics. The data is gathered from the UK's electricity trading market, which shows how much electricity each type of power generator - from coal to wind - are currently producing during any five-minute interval.
Green Mark holders will be aware of our recommendation to have timer plugs on any charging stations or any equipment that is left on overnight. This website displaying this kind of instant data about when is best to do that power-hungry photocopy job or server back up can save you money and cut your emissions. Also it's further evidence for putting on your dishwasher/washing machine at home overnight - even more money and emissions saved!
